India has called for deeper collaboration on global food security as it hosted the two-day BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ Meeting in Madhya Pradesh.
India’s Minister of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Shivraj Singh Chouhan described the conference as an important platform for jointly addressing challenges faced by small and marginal farmers worldwide, particularly those linked to climate change, rising input costs, and market instability.
He urged BRICS member states to strengthen cooperation in order to empower small farmers, ensure food security, and promote sustainable agricultural development. “Collective efforts by BRICS nations can provide a new direction to global agriculture,” he said, adding that such collaboration could contribute to a more secure and inclusive agricultural future.
The discussions come as BRICS continues to position itself as a platform for enhanced economic coordination among major emerging economies, with a focus on alternative financial mechanisms, reducing dependency on the US dollar, and increasing Global South representation in global institutions.
India’s 2026 BRICS chairmanship will operate under the theme “Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability,” reflecting its broader agenda for agricultural and economic cooperation.
Together, BRICS countries account for more than 40% of the world’s population and over 32% of global GDP, underscoring the bloc’s growing influence in global policy discussions.
