Media literacy is as basic a skill as reading and writing, Shafag Mehraliyeva, lecturer at the Department of Communication and Media Studies at ADA University, said at the 3rd Shusha Global Media Forum.
"Media literacy is as necessary a skill as the ability to read and write. After all, if a person can read and write but cannot analyze information, it's like coming to a dinner party and not being able to taste the food," she explained figuratively.
According to Mehraliyeva, if we interpret the concept more broadly, media literacy includes two main components: "First, it is the ability to interpret and critically evaluate content based on knowledge and verified sources. Second, it is the ability to perceive different opinions with respect and tolerance for alternative points of view."
She added that without those skills, it is impossible to effectively navigate the modern media landscape, where information circulates at a tremendous speed and is not always reliable.
