China on Tuesday called on all parties to exercise restraint amid continued tensions between Israel and Lebanon, despite a preliminary peace agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at halting military operations across several regional fronts, including Lebanese territory.
EDnews reports that Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian expressed Beijing’s concern over the situation, emphasizing the importance of respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and security.
“China is deeply concerned over the situation regarding Lebanon and Israel. Lebanon's sovereignty and security should not be infringed upon,” Lin said during a press briefing in Beijing.
He urged all relevant parties to avoid actions that could escalate tensions, adhere to ceasefire commitments, and work toward a comprehensive and lasting cessation of hostilities.
“We urge all relevant parties to exercise restraint in words and deeds, uphold the choice of peace, earnestly carry out ceasefire agreements, realize a comprehensive and enduring ceasefire, and foster conditions for peace and stability across the Middle East,” he stated.
The remarks came after a Lebanese journalist was injured on Monday by shrapnel from an Israeli shell in southern Lebanon, marking the first reported casualty since Washington and Tehran announced an agreement intended to end military operations in several conflict zones, including Lebanon.
The formal signing ceremony for the agreement is expected to take place in Switzerland on Friday.
Lin also noted that China remains in contact with relevant stakeholders regarding maritime security and will continue efforts to protect Chinese vessels and crew operating in the Strait of Hormuz.
“The Strait of Hormuz is a strait for international navigation, and restoring safe and free passage serves the interests of all parties,” he added.
