Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has welcomed the agreement reached between the United States and Iran, describing it as a significant diplomatic achievement that could help reduce tensions across the Middle East.
EDnews reports that Fidan made the remarks during a joint press conference with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov following talks in Moscow on Tuesday.
The Turkish foreign minister said Ankara hopes the agreement will move successfully toward its final signing stage and evolve into a lasting diplomatic framework capable of contributing to long-term regional security.
“As our President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has emphasized, our greatest hope is that this step, which has given our region and the entire world some breathing room, will evolve into a structural and lasting security architecture rather than a temporary period of calm,” Fidan said.
He stressed the importance of preserving a constructive atmosphere during the period leading up to the formal signing of the agreement, warning against actions or rhetoric that could undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
Fidan also highlighted the role played by the political leadership of both the United States and Iran in achieving the breakthrough and praised mediation efforts undertaken by Pakistan, as well as diplomatic support provided by Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
The Turkish minister underscored the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, stating that maintaining safe, free and uninterrupted maritime navigation through the waterway remains essential for regional stability, global energy security and international trade.
“Holding the Strait of Hormuz open to the safe, free and uninterrupted passage of all vessels, as it was before the war, is of vital importance not only for regional stability but also for global energy security and international trade,” he said.
Fidan added that Türkiye hopes the agreement will pave the way for a broader peace process in the region and reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to supporting diplomatic initiatives aimed at strengthening stability and cooperation.
