Russian President Vladimir Putin said Russia and the United States, as the world's two largest nuclear powers, share a special responsibility for maintaining global security and stability.
In a message to U.S. President Donald Trump marking the 250th anniversary of American independence, Putin said the signing of the U.S. Declaration of Independence represented not only the birth of the United States but also a significant moment in world history, according to the Kremlin.
The Russian leader noted that Russia supported the North American colonies during their struggle for independence from British rule and highlighted the two nations' alliance during both World Wars.
"We were allies in two world wars, together we freed humanity from the horrors of Nazism, and then played a vital role in laying the foundations of the modern world order," Putin said.
He added that Russia and the United States have a shared responsibility to ensure international security and expressed hope that relations between Moscow and Washington could develop on the basis of equality, mutual respect, and shared interests.
According to Putin, constructive and mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries would serve not only their national interests but also contribute to broader global stability.
