Iran has issued a warning against what it describes as the presence of “extra-regional powers” in the Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said the waterway is not a “theatre for the military display” of outside powers, according to remarks posted on social media platform X.
His comments came after the United Kingdom and France expressed readiness to support freedom of navigation in the strategic strait.
Gharibabadi said Iran considers itself a responsible guarantor of security in the region and cautioned against any military movements in the area.
“The security of Hormuz lies with the coastal states,” he said, warning that those he described as “crisis-makers” would be held accountable for any consequences of their actions.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which a significant portion of global oil exports passes.
