At least 30 people have died in a cholera outbreak in Sudan’s West Kordofan state since June 20, while around 800 others have been infected, according to a Sudanese relief organization.
In a statement released on Sunday, the Dar Hamar Emergency Room said the outbreak has affected Wad Banda and Al-Nahud localities, as well as more than 25 surrounding villages.
The organization warned that the rapidly spreading disease has overwhelmed local communities and urgently appealed to humanitarian organizations and health authorities to provide medicines, intravenous fluids and essential medical supplies to help contain the outbreak.
According to the group, the latest figures show 30 deaths and approximately 800 confirmed cholera infections across the affected areas.
Earlier this week, Sudan’s Health Ministry reported 911 cholera cases and 127 deaths in West and North Kordofan states, highlighting the worsening public health crisis.
Sudan has been facing a severe humanitarian emergency since conflict erupted in April 2023 between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The ongoing war has devastated the country's healthcare system, contributed to the spread of disease, killed tens of thousands of people and displaced nearly 13 million others.
