Support is growing among progressive Democrats in the US House of Representatives for a proposal to block approximately $3.3 billion in US military aid to Israel.
Congressman Greg Casar, who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus, announced he will support the amendment, arguing that US assistance should not be used in conflicts involving Israel.
"It is past time for us to end aid used to commit genocide in Gaza, kill innocents in Lebanon and beyond, and help drag us into war with Iran," Casar wrote in a post on X.
Representative Ro Khanna, a co-sponsor of the amendment, also said he would vote in favor of the measure, citing his recent detention by Israeli settlers in the occupied West Bank.
"I cannot vote for aid to a country that committed genocide and has used tax dollars to detain Americans like me," Khanna said.
The amendment seeks to halt about $3.3 billion in US military assistance to Israel. The allegations of genocide cited by the lawmakers are disputed by Israel, and the issue remains the subject of international legal proceedings and political debate.
