US Launches New Wave of Air Strikes on Iran, CENTCOM Says - UPDATED

The United States has launched a new round of air strikes against Iran, targeting military sites that Washington says have been used to threaten commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation began at 6:00 a.m. Washington time (10:00 GMT / 1:30 p.m. Tehran time).

CENTCOM said the strikes are intended to further degrade Iranian military capabilities used in attacks on commercial vessels transiting the strategic waterway.

The latest operation marks another escalation in the ongoing confrontation between the United States and Iran, as tensions continue to rise across the Gulf region.

Bushehr Governor Mohammad Mozafari says the US projectiles that fell in the city in the morning did not cause any casualties, according to the official IRNA news agency.

He said that four locations in the western port city were struck by the US army on Tuesday.

“Rescue agencies are currently alert, and calm is prevailing in the city,” the governor told the agency.

The US military says it has carried out another round of strikes against Iran, targeting military infrastructure near the Strait of Hormuz and along Iran's coastline.

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the operation concluded at 10:00 p.m. EST on July 14 (02:00 GMT on July 15) and involved precision strikes on dozens of military targets.

CENTCOM said US fighter aircraft, drones and naval vessels were used during the seven-hour operation, targeting Iranian missile and drone sites, naval assets and coastal defense systems.

The US military said the strikes were intended to further degrade Iran's ability to threaten commercial shipping and civilian vessels operating in and around the Strait of Hormuz.

The operation came on the same day US forces resumed a naval blockade on vessels traveling to or from Iranian ports and coastal areas, with the measure taking effect at 4:00 p.m. ET (20:00 GMT) on July 14, according to CENTCOM.

The US Central Command (CENTCOM) said its forces launched another round of strikes against Iran on Tuesday.

"At 3 p.m. ET today, U.S. Central Command forces began launching an additional round of strikes against Iran to continue degrading Iranian capabilities used to attack commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz," CENTCOM said in a statement.

The command said the strikes are taking place as American forces prepare to resume the naval blockade against Iranian ports and coastal areas.

"The blockade goes into effect at 4 p.m. ET," it added.
