US President Donald Trump granted TikTok a second 75-day extension to comply with a law requiring the app to either sell its US operations or face a ban. Trump emphasized that they did not want TikTok to “go dark” and were working with China to finalize the deal. The platform, owned by Chinese company ''ByteDance'', has over 170 million US users.
ByteDance confirmed ongoing discussions but stated that no agreement had been finalized and that approval under Chinese law was needed. The Trump administration has been negotiating to bring TikTok under American ownership, with the deadline set by Congress for ByteDance to sell or face a ban.
Earlier attempts to finalize the deal faltered after Trump announced global tariffs, which led China to halt approval. Several potential buyers have emerged, including Amazon, Frank McCourt with Kevin O’Leary, Microsoft, Blackstone, and Andreessen Horowitz.
Trump’s administration is also considering offering China tariff relief in exchange for approval of the TikTok sale.
